Vienna continues to lead the way: second place in the 2018 ICCA congress statistics

The latest global congress figures just confirmed by ICCA for 2018 saw Vienna retain its second place. With a total of 172 events, the city ranked behind Paris (212) and ahead of Madrid (165). Christian Woronka, head of the Vienna Convention Bureau (VCB) and Market Management at the Vienna Tourist Board explained: “We are delighted with another excellent finish for Vienna this year in a highly competitive market. The Austrian capital’s strong performance – driven by its focus on the visitor economy – is down to the outstanding cooperation between all of the players in the Viennese meeting industry: from the congress centers and venues, to the hotel industry and agencies, as well as the customers that we were able to attract to Vienna. I would like to thank them all for their contribution, and congratulate my colleagues in Paris on their first place!”

Congress industry in transition: ECR - 25th anniversary

The European Congress of Radiology has grown to become one of the largest and most innovative medical gatherings anywhere in the world. Hosted at the Austria Center Vienna each year, it attracts over 28,000 participants from more than 130 countries. It has huge importance for Austria from an economic and research point of view. However, the international meetings industry is currently changing at an incredible pace.

The ECR is without doubt one of the flagship congresses because of the ways in which it innovates each year. Unlike at many other events, a conventional poster presentation format has not been used since 2003 thanks to the availability of specially developed proprietary software. A study published by the Institute for Advanced Studies confirms also the importance of the national economy: gross economic impact around € 28m – 509 jobs have been created.
